iBooks on iPhone: Happy Ending for Disgruntled Apple Readers

iBooksWhen iBooks debuted Saturday as an app for iPad on the iTunes store, disgruntled iPhone users let loose their displeasure in sharply worded reviews in the app store.

They fumed about iBooks exclusivity to the new darling of the computer world, iPad.

Apple Chief Steve Jobs, though, ended the drama today with the announcement that iBooks is one of the 7 “tentpole” new features on the new iPhone OS 4.0 shipping later this year.

“Just since rolling out on the iPad, we’ve had a great deal of requests to bring this to the iPhone. And, of course, we were going to do it,” Jobs said at today’s unveiling of the new iPhone operating system.

Jobs made another point: You only have to buy once, and transfer the publication to your iPad or iPod Touch. “Buy once, read anywhere” is the iBooks slogan.

“We think customers will really enjoy this,” Jobs said. “Just buy it once, and read it on all your devices.”

Amazon’s Kindle, the e-reader to directly compete with iBooks on iPad, already offers 450,000 Kindle books for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Jobs said 600,000 iBooks have already been downloaded.
