FDIC Warns of Fraudulent E-mails Bearing Its Name

Identity theftThe Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the agency that insures Americans’ bank deposits, has posted an alert warning the public of bogus e-mails claiming to come from the FDIC.

The FDIC said it has received numerous reports of the e-mails, which are fraudulent and should be deleted.

The subject line of the e-mails state: “Just for your time.”

They tell the recipients the following: “The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Online department kindly asks you to take part in our quick and easy 5 questions survey.”

It says that those who take the survey will have $50.00 credited to their account – “Just for your time!”

“The e-mail then directs recipients to click on a link to take the survey (a fraudulent link is provided),” the FDIC alert said.

Recipients should consider the intent of this e-mail as “an attempt to collect personal or confidential information, or to load malicious software onto end users’ computers,” the FDIC said.

The FDIC it does not issue unsolicited e-mails to consumers. “Financial institutions and consumers should NOT follow the link in the fraudulent e-mail,” it said.
