The Federal Trade Commission wants to drive home the impact of a well-crafted and marketed website that “guarantees” a loan – just like your typical advance-fee scam sites.
So it created its own “teaser” site to make a point: Scammers cleverly can masquerade as lenders.
And they often get away with it.
At wemarket4u.net/esteemed/index.html, consumers are treated to the fictitious world of “Esteemed Lending Services, where a loan for every situation is guaranteed.”
The site claims qualified loan specialists will help you find a loan for any purpose, or consolidate your high-interest debt – regardless of your credit history.
All click-throughs lead to an FTC resource site that says: “If you responded to an offer like this one…you could have been scammed.”
The FTC site says that “the catch comes when you apply for a loan or credit card and find out there’s a fee you have to pay first.”
It’s unlikely you’ll see the loan if you pay the fee, and “you run the risk of someone using your personal or financial information to steal your identity,” the FTC said.
This website and other FTC “teaser sites” are available at wemarket4u.net.
