United MileagePlus: Trade Unused Gift Cards for Flier Miles

The expanding universe of gift card trading has taken another turn with United Continental’s new program enabling travelers to exchange unused portions of gift cards – from more than 60 major retailers – into award miles.

It’s called the United MileagePlus Gift Card Exchange and it is likely a first.

Consumers can log in, select the retailer linked to their gift card and enter the card information.

Once the transaction is verified, United converts the balance on the gift card to award miles and deposits the miles into the member’s account.

It takes up to five business days for the cards to be verified and the award miles to be deposited into an account.

The balance remaining on the gift card has to be $25 or more.

To find out how many miles you can get for your card, go to ualmiles.com/mpgiftcardexchange. Enter your gift card information to receive an offer.

“You are under no obligation to sell your card, and we will not retain your gift card information if you do not confirm your sale,” reads the gift card exchange program’s FAQs section.

The mileage offer you get for the same gift card of the same value may change from time to time.
