American Express Sponsors Conan O’Brien’s Comedy Tour

American Express knows a hot trend, and it’s sponsoring former Tonight Show host and new Twitter user Conan O’Brien on his just-announced comedy tour across the country. You don’t become the most used credit card for purchases unless you can spot the hottest ticket. At TeamCoco.com you can see the American Express logo right underneath Conan’s mostly gray and white poster portrait — except for the orange hair and the orange title: “Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour.”

American Express, TakePart Launch during Oscar Telecast

If you watched the commercials during the Academy Awards, you may have caught the launch of “Members Project” by American Express and TakePart.com, the online philanthropic channel for those interested in entertainment with a social conscience. The credit card giant has formed a partnership with Participant Media, the creator of TakePart.com that showcases innovative documentaries, such as the Academy Award-winning An Inconvenient Truth and the Oscar-nominated Food, Inc., “to drive citizen engagement and social action.”

Goldman Sachs, Chase, AmEx Make Top 50 ‘Most Admired’

Never mind that they may be associated with the financial crisis, bailouts and credit card rate hikes, but four financial giants cracked the top 50 most admired companies list by Fortune magazine. Apple took the top spot, while Google, Berkshire Hathaway, Johnson & Johnson and Amazon.com rounded out the top five. Goldman Sachs Group – labeled the “strongest financial services firm to emerge from the recession” – ranked 8th.

In a year when credit card issuers were more unpopular than ever and growing identity theft cases were tied to credit card fraud, American Express managed to snag the “Most Trusted Company for Privacy” distinction for the fifth consecutive year. The honor comes from Michigan-based Ponemon Institute, a research organization that focuses on privacy issues and data protection. Following American Express in the top five were IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Hewlett Packard and e-Bay.

On the day landmark credit card laws took effect and made headlines worldwide, American Express and Discover released statements seeking to educate customers with online guides on the reform. Nine in ten Americans have set a financial goal for the year, with 83 percent hoping to save – on average – $14,000, according to the most recent survey of consumer spending and saving habits from American Express. AmEx characterized the savings goal as ambitious because the amount accounts for about 22 percent of average household income.

Despite a mostly positive group of earnings reports this week from the biggest credit card-issuing companies, forecasts of possible profit trouble ahead as card reform laws take affect are rattling Wall Street. Particularly worrisome to investors – which sent shares of American Express and Capital One tumbling Friday – were an analyst’s forecast and comments from executives at American Express and Capital One. “The lack of consumer demand for credit, across our businesses, is striking,” said Capital One Chief Executive Richard Fairbank.

In 2009, American Express was ranked highest in customer satisfaction among credit card companies by J.D. Power and Associates for the third consecutive year. AmEx now wants to offer its expertise derived from rewards program successes and effective co-branding projects.
