Under the financial services category, American Express has been recognized by the Ethisphere Institute – a think tank that promotes business ethics – as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for 2010. The credit card giant shared the distinction with The Hartford and The Principal Financial Group within the financial services industry.

The corporate marketing reliance on social media took a step further today with credit card giant American Express telling the legions of Conan O’Brien fans to tweet if they want to meet “Coco.” After several days of fans and followers buzzing about today’s American Express announcement, the sponsor posted a brief explanation on its website. AmEx provided the link on its own Twitter page with more than 14,500 followers.

Nearly three quarters of workers surveyed by American Express say their job status is as stable, if not more stable, than it was a year ago, according to the card issuer’s monthly Spending & Saving Tracker study. Of these respondents, 54 percent feel their job is just as stable, while a much smaller number, 16 percent, feel their job is more stable. Nearly a quarter consider their job “less stable” compared to last year, AmEx said.

American Express knows a hot trend, and it’s sponsoring former Tonight Show host and new Twitter user Conan O’Brien on his just-announced comedy tour across the country. You don’t become the most used credit card for purchases unless you can spot the hottest ticket. At TeamCoco.com you can see the American Express logo right underneath Conan’s mostly gray and white poster portrait — except for the orange hair and the orange title: “Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour.”

Never mind that they may be associated with the financial crisis, bailouts and credit card rate hikes, but four financial giants cracked the top 50 most admired companies list by Fortune magazine. Apple took the top spot, while Google, Berkshire Hathaway, Johnson & Johnson and Amazon.com rounded out the top five. Goldman Sachs Group – labeled the “strongest financial services firm to emerge from the recession” – ranked 8th.

In a year when credit card issuers were more unpopular than ever and growing identity theft cases were tied to credit card fraud, American Express managed to snag the “Most Trusted Company for Privacy” distinction for the fifth consecutive year. The honor comes from Michigan-based Ponemon Institute, a research organization that focuses on privacy issues and data protection. Following American Express in the top five were IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Hewlett Packard and e-Bay.

On the day landmark credit card laws took effect and made headlines worldwide, American Express and Discover released statements seeking to educate customers with online guides on the reform. Most other major credit card issuers did not release statements on the most sweeping credit card legislation in years – the first to generally ban retroactive interest rate increases and restrict certain fees.
